Moving along...

Coaches’ Clinic: The deadline for the lower price registration is nearing…have you made plans to attend? So far we only have 3 people committed to attend. 8-( Remember to go ahead and register, then send us copies of your registration form and check before you drop it in the mail. You will be reimbursed after the next school board meeting. To enhance your experience for the day, and if you are only coaching one event, you might want to attend the other events your child is assigned to. It will give you an idea as to what they are up to in at least one part of their lives. You might even be able to provide some pointers!

Usage of school labs and classrooms: Please make sure after you are finished using a space at Park View that the area is put back to order and all evidence of your ever being there is gone. Enlist the help of your students to get the job done. This goes right along with the Warrior Way traits we are teaching this year.

A few things

SUPPLIES: We have only heard from two events as far as needed supplies. We are in the process of getting together an order for goggles, chemical aprons and lab coats but we know there are other needs out there. Don’t be bashful: we need to be in the know!

EVENT PRACTICE TIMES: Many of you have let us know the times you plan to practice. If we haven't heard from you, please give us an idea as to when your practices will be happening.

COACHES’ CLINIC: We understand you are having troubles figuring out what time to register for. No kidding! Rest assured, as soon as we hear the schedule is ready, we will let you know.

SCIENCE LAB/GYM USE: We will be happy to make sure you have a location in which to practice. Please let us know your needs and we will see what we can do. The sooner, the better! In addition, there is no reason why more than one group couldn’t use the lab at the same time…it makes for teamwork.

Bridge testing...WOW!

Thirteen bridges were checked against the rules and then tested for strength. The strongest bridge held 110 pounds before it began altering the shape of the metal bucket holding the sand. The bridge held... the bucket was showing signs of fatigue, so the testing stopped! The bridge building exceeded the expectations of all and there was a great team spirit in the room during the testing. thanks to all current team members and parents who attended. Three or four more bridges will be tested on Friday and then the team will be announced on Tuesday. Four team members will be added with three more selected as alternates. Getting closer all the time to the beginning of the 2009-2010 season.

SO Tryout Bridge Testing

You are welcome to join us for bridge testing on Wednesday, September 2 at 3:45 p.m. in the science lab. (Date was changed from the one in the tryout packet due to a conflict) We will have 12 students trying out this year for the team. Excitement prevails!

More Summer Stuff

The first annual (maybe?!) SO Day Camp was successful for the 7 students who popped in during the day. We had a variety of things going on with the sole purpose of helping to clear up any issues/questions from the tryout packet. The treats helped BUT I do think the students were all enthused and felt the time was worthwhile. Admittedly, Janet and I were relieved that the whole group didn’t show up as we would have gone crazy!

In the last minutes of the day, we had the students help us move the crated/boxed materials form the scenic shower room to the newly installed shelving in the SOD (SO Dungeon) and it looks so ORGANIZED! Tours will be available when we have our parent meeting in the fall. 8-) Thanks to Jim Johnson and his crew for helping us realize this “dream.”

July update

You may be aware of this already, but Science Chicago is coming to Morton Grove! This free science celebration will be held on Saturday, July 25 from 11 to 3 in Harrer Park. Park View is partnering with the MG Public Library and the MG Park District to offer this amazing opportunity for families to interact with science.

Also, we are offering an SO Tryout Day Camp on Tuesday, July 28 (drop in style) in the science lab from 9 to 2 for the 40 students who have taken SO tryout packets. While this is not required for current SO team members, if your super scientist and/or you want to get out of the house to help the aspiring scientists, your help would not be turned down! The students will be given the opportunity to receive assistance in the three areas: bridge building, metric mastery and general research. This is purely optional for those trying out and we won’t have an idea as to who is coming until closer to the 28th, that is, IF they RSVP to our postcard invite.

The SO dungeon, soon to be the SO resource room (can you think of a catchy name?!) is coming along with the lockers having been removed and the walls painted. The materials are anxiously awaiting even nicer digs by the time school starts.
